BES Art Corner

Hello families! We are in full swing of creating art that celebrates Black History Month!

6th grade has been working so hard on how to draw a face. They then had to pick a famous African American and draw their face! They are turning out so well!

5th grade finished their skin toned weaving project and was introduced to Jean-Michel Basquiat-our next featured Artist of the Month.

Jean -Michel Basquiat is a Brooklyn-born, influential African American artist who rose to fame in the 1980s New York underground scene. His work, known for his gestural marks and primitive style, is considered a groundbreaking contribution to the Neo-Expressionism movement.

4th grade finished up their personality traits about themselves, loved one or a famous African American. We worked on learning complementary colors to make their hand and hearts which are attached to their artwork.

3rd grade learned all about Martin Luther King Jr. I Have a Dream speech. They are currently part of the way through recreating this scene. They learned about sizes, proportion and perspective.

2nd grade had a guest speaker come to teach them about quilt making. I read the book, The Patchwork Path by Bettye Stroud. This book is about the images stitched into Hannah's quilt led to secret signposts on the Underground Railroad as she and her father take flight from slavery on a perilous path to freedom. Karen Burkholder came and presented to each class about quilts are made, color and pattern choices and she brought some of her own quilts to show the students! The kids loved having a guest speaker and learning about quilts. The 2nd graders then made their own quilt square. The grade levels squares will be placed together to form a wall paper quilt.

1st graders listened to the book Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan. Long ago, Blackbird was voted the most beautiful bird in the forest. The other birds, who were colored red, yellow, blue, and green, were so envious that they begged Blackbird to paint their feathers with a touch of black so they could be beautiful too. Although Black-bird warns them that true beauty comes from within, the other birds persist and soon each is given a ring of black around their neck or a dot of black on their wings—markings that detail birds to this very day. 1st graders then created art based of this book!

Kindergarteners make door hanger wreaths with handprints and our earth. They worked hard on their gluing and writing skills as they wrote the words- We can change the world! These wreaths are hung on every door in the school as they spread their message to others!
