Mrs. Hayes

A Note from Our Principal πŸ’›

Mrs. Shawnie Hays

Greetings SHES Families,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday break. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it being 2025! I want to send a special shout out to our wonderful PTO for organizing a fun Pancakes and PJ's with Santa event. We had a great turnout and loved seeing all our Thunderbolt families that were able to attend. Also, thank you to our staff members and 6th grade leadership members who helped with this event! It takes all of us pitching in to provide wonderful experiences for our students.

Thank you to those who were able to donate to our adopted families in December. Mrs. Fleming and I were able to deliver gifts of clothing, toys, monetary donations through gift cards and utility payments to four SHES Families. We couldn't do this without your generous support.

Cold weather is definitely here! Please make sure that students are dressed properly so that they can continue to play outside as temperatures allow. Community donations of hats, gloves and winter coats are available. Please contact me if winter items are needed.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at

785-730-5345 or at hayss@usd450.net.

Sincerely,

Shawnie Hays, Principal

Mrs. Clay's Check-In πŸ–€

Happy New Year, Thunderbolts!

We hope this finds our SHES family rested and renewed after winter break. I know I appreciated having time to focus only on my favorite people that are pictured. πŸ™‚ We had lots of family time and made some wonderful memories. As you can see, zero fun is had in our house!

We are looking forward to picking things back up here with students, staff, and families at SHES. We are especially excited to introduce Grown-Up Greeters as a regular opportunity for those who are interested in participating. The SignUp Genius link is below for any who are willing and/or able to join us on Friday mornings.

A few bussing reminders as we kick off our second semester:

  • Food or drinks of any kind (with the exception of water bottles) must be kept in backpacks at all times. Students are not permitted to eat while on the bus.

  • We kindly ask that all students are on time and waiting outside at their bus stop each morning. Winter temperatures can make this less than desirable, but promptness helps keep the schedule running smoothly and ensures a safe, efficient trip for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and support in making this happen!

We look forward to another great semester here at SHES. As always, please reach out to me with questions or clarifications at clayk@usd450.net or 785-730-5183.

Take care,

Katie Clay, Assistant Principal

1st Grade Imagination Monsters πŸ‘Ή

Last October, first grade students in Mrs. Taylor's class drew some of the most amazing and whimsical monsters you’ve ever seen! But that’s not all -- our first graders' artwork got a magical twist when our talented SHHS art students transformed those drawings into incredible 3D sculptures! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ¨ From paper to reality, these monsters are proof of the power of imagination and teamwork!

Grown-Up Greeters πŸ‘‹πŸΌ

Ask and you shall receive! We have been thrilled at the outpouring of interest we've had regarding Grown-Up Greeters. December was our "pilot month" of sorts, but we are confident we will have enough volunteers to roll this out for the rest of the school year!

Below you will find a link to sign up as a Grown-Up Greeter; simply choose a Friday morning that works for you and plug in your name. On the morning of your selected date, you will meet either Mrs. Hays or Mrs. Clay at the main entrance and be directed to your assigned location to greet students.

βš‘οΈπŸ–€

Our 6th Grade Leadership Team continues to serve our school and serve it well! This team has a strong understanding of 'see a need, fill a need.' They are the first to volunteer no matter the task and they aren't afraid to get their hands dirty!

βœ… Selling Smens
βœ… Making important school-wide announcements
βœ… Crushing cans from the teacher's lounge to be recycled
βœ… Volunteering at various events such as the Chili Feed and Pancakes & PJs with Santa
βœ… Meeting weekly to discuss next steps and building needs

While our first semester had a strong focus on service, the spring semester will lean more into character building. This team has already started brainstorming ways that they can not only encourage, but model ways to be our best self and live out the 8 Keys of Excellence. We can't wait to see what all they have in store for us at SHES!

Rollin' with Mr. Simpson πŸ›Ό

πŸ›Ό

All students in kindergarten through sixth grade will be roller skating in physical education class during the weeks of January 27th – 31st and February 3rd- 7th.  Thank you to our SHES PTO who covers the cost of the Skate Time program, which provides us with skates and safety gear.

Please consider signing up to volunteer during your students’ PE time or any other time that you are available to help.  We always need help with getting the students skates on/off, tying laces, and keeping them safe!
