Mrs. Hayes

A Note from Our Principal πŸ–€

Mrs. Shawnie Hays

Greetings SHES Families,

It is always so wonderful to connect with our families during Parent/Teacher conferences! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child’s educational journey. I also want to thank our PTO for providing such wonderful meals to our staff during conferences. The home cooked meals were greatly appreciated πŸ˜‹

Our Halloween parade and parties were a lot of fun! Thank you for being flexible as we changed our parade route indoors due to the cold temperature. The students and staff sure had a great day!

We are excited to continue the tradition of honoring our Veterans with our Veteran’s Day parade on Tuesday, November 11th at 2:00pm. Our Veterans will line up along Burton and drive through our SHES front parking lot where our students and staff will be cheering them on! Please encourage your student to wear red, white, and blue. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

We hope that you can join us on November 20th from 5:00-7:30pm for our PTO Dinner and Game Night. This event also includes our volleyball intramural tournament for our 5th and 6th grade participants. More information will be coming soon, we hope you can join us!

Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

Please let me know if you have any concerns. I can be reached at 785-730-5345 or at hayss@usd450.net.

Sincerely,

Shawnie Hays, Principal

Mrs. Clay's Check-In πŸ’›

Happy November, Thunderbolts! ⚑️

October was another busy yet fulfilling month here at SHES. Shout out to Ms. Miller and Mrs. Locke for running our student campaign for United Way, raising over $200!

We had an outstanding day of learning with our certified staff last Monday. We spent our morning on 'A Map to Intervention', diving deeper into tiered-learning models and how to best meet the needs of all of our students. The final piece to this was a presentation from Greenbush Resource Center on 'What's So Special About Special Education'. The afternoon was spent in grade-level teams with some further coaching from our Greenbush representative. While we always miss having our students in-house, these days are critical for us to continue learning and growing in how we help all students reach high levels of success.

In anticipation of state assessments in the spring, our 3rd-6th grade classrooms have been taking advantage of some of the preparatory components of the Kansas Assessment Program. Students have participated in mini-assessments as well as interims to prepare our students for the formal testing process -- that window is March 23 through April 24, 2026.

Just a reminder that I will be signing out very soon for 8(ish) weeks once Clay babe #2 decides to make her appearance. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility! If you need to reach me before my maternity leave, I can be reached via phone at 785-730-5183 or via email at clayk@usd450.net.

Halloween Festivities πŸ•ΈοΈπŸŽƒ

Music Programs with Mrs. Banman 🎡

*Please arrive at the Shawnee Heights High School Auditorium 10-15 minutes before the performance time (approx. 6:50). Students should remain with parents during that time.

*Please wear nice dress clothes. When students perform music on a stage, it is important to dress up a little and feel proud of the way they look. Parents can decide what that means for their children and budget. Please avoid graphic T-shirts and athletic pants or shorts. Also, keep in mind that high heels and hats are not good choices for risers, so please don’t wear those. Please know that while I encourage dressing up, I care more about the student being there than what they wear.

*I will rehearse with the kids in the gym at SHES, during school, so they will learn their placements.

*At about 5 minutes before show time, students should be ready to start taking their places on the stage. I will make an announcement, and students will line up in their riser order, along the walls inside the auditorium.

*If you have a good reason to miss this performance, please write me a note, email me, send me a message on Remind, or call the office and leave me a message. I need to know why your child is absent so I can determine what to give them for their performance grade. Performing is part of the national standards in music education. This is the one time of year that the performance grade is based on the evening program.

Thank You!

Art with Mrs. Schawang 🎨

SHES is partnering up with Square1Art to participate in a new, student-centered fundraising opportunity. Students have been creating art samples that can then be turned into various merchandise items. With the holidays right around the corner, these would be perfect gift ideas or simply sweet keepsakes.

Library with Ms. Harrison πŸ“š

Beanstack is a new app that all of the elementary schools in Shawnee Heights are using this year. It is the same app that the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library uses for their reading challenges, too. The competitive spirit encourages adds a fun twist to encouraging a love of reading amongst teachers and learners. This in turn can influence reading comprehension and fluency, having a positive impact on student achievement.

The idea is to engage readers authentically to read or be read to.  Audio books, read-alouds, shared readings, independent reading all count towards their minutes. There are no tests to take and it runs on the honor system, although a log will flag if the count is suspicious.

Students and families received information at parent/teacher conferences; for any further information please reach out to Ms. Harrison at harrisons@usd450.net.
